A few years ago, my sister went through an eye-opening experience when one of her closest friends unfollowed her on Instagram. Here's what happened and what she learned from it.
She and her friend had been tight since middle school, so naturally, they followed each other and regularly liked and commented on each other's posts. It was just part of their friendship.
One day, my sister posted a picture showing off her new hairstyle. She was expecting her friend to drop a nice comment, as usual. But this time, nothing. She figured maybe her friend was just busy and didn't think much of it.
The next day, though, my sister noticed that her friend hadn't even viewed her Instagram stories. Starting to feel a little curious, she checked her friend's profile. At that moment, she realized that she had been unfollowed. This really threw her off, so she couldn't help but feel a bit hurt and confused.
Not wanting to jump to conclusions, she sent her friend a casual text: “Hey, did you see my new post?” Her friend replied later, saying she had seen it. That's when my sister carefully asked why she'd unfollowed her. Her friend admitted she was going through a tough time and just needed to take a step back from social media which included her posts.
While her friend's explanation made sense, the whole thing made my sister think more deeply about how social media affects our relationships. Sometimes, when someone unfollows you, it's not about what you've posted at all. It's more about what they're going through in their own life.
In the end, my sister learned that empathy and honest communication are key to maintaining real friendships. Social media doesn't always tell the whole story. It's important to remember that everyone has their own stuff going on behind the scenes.
So, the next time you notice someone unfollowing you, try not to take it personally. Instead, reach out and ask how they're doing. You might be surprised by what you learn. At Unifolllow, we're all about building connections and understanding the stories behind the numbers. We believe that every unfollow has a story and it's worth listening to.
