The Human Dilemma: Why Do We Care Who Unfollows Us on Instagram?

9/22/24

Whether we like it or not, Instagram has become a big part of our daily lives. Losing followers can actually hit us harder than we'd expect and that is something Unifollow is trying to solve. As humans, we naturally crave social approval and validation. Platforms like Instagram make that super easy to measure with things like likes, comments, and follows. So, when someone unfollows us, it's hard not to take it personally. It can feel like a form of rejection which can lead to a whole lot of self-doubt and insecurity (even if we don't want to admit it).

One of the biggest reasons why losing followers bothers us so much is FOMO (fear of missing out). It's that nagging feeling that we all experience when we are being left out or that we are missing something important. When we see our follower count drop, it can make us worry that we're not part of the "accepted" crowd anymore. Or, we may even feel like we're losing touch with trends and conversations. Social media is already notorious for encouraging comparison. When we see someone else's profile growing while ours is shrinking, it can make us feel inadequate. All of this can really take a toll on our self-esteem.

For many people, Instagram isn't just about pretty pictures and captions. It's also about building connections with our friends. When a follower leaves, especially if it's someone we know in real life, it can feel like losing a personal connection. This can sting even more because we often associate our follower count with social currency. So when that number drops, it can feel like we're losing status.

In the end, losing followers taps into something deeper than just numbers on a screen. It can affect how we see ourselves and how we think others see us. And in a world where social media plays such a huge role in shaping our identities and interactions, it's no wonder that even a small dip in followers can lead to big feelings.
